US Changes Policy on Detention of Asylum Seekers

On December 16, 2009, the Obama Administration announced that it will no longer detain asylum seekers who have demonstrated a credible fear of persecution in their home countries, prove their identities and show they are not dangerous or a flight risk. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson stated that “Asylum seekers still will spend time in detention while they undergo interviews and their information is checked, but the administration hopes to reduce the length of their stay with a policy change.”  More information is available in the article in the New York Times.
